Identity

Ganna Bogachuk

This project is an artistic exploration of the factors that shape national identity through the memories and stories of women from the eastern, southern, and central regions of Ukraine.

September 26 - November 26
Opening Reception: September 26, 6 - 10 pm

The artist conducted more than 30 individual audio interviews with the project’s participants, asking only one question: “Do you remember the moment when you first realized that you were Ukrainian?” In responding, the participants revisited childhood memories, reflected on their past, and discovered answers that were not always obvious, yet deeply meaningful.

These conversations were translated into visual works and video art. In her work, the artist uses transparent silk as a symbol of the fragility and delicacy of our memories. Photographs from the participants’ personal archives are printed on the silk using the cyanotype technique. The artist invites viewers to interact with the work by lifting the light textile layers and immersing themselves in the stories of identity formation—stories that are both diverse and deeply intimate. In doing so, viewers are also invited to recall their own histories.

Additionally, Ganna conducted a statistical analysis of the factors mentioned in the interviews and created a scale of the most frequently referenced influences on the formation of national identity. This analysis is presented in the form of an infographic.
